Your Divorce or Family Lawyer’s Commitment to Privacy and Confidentiality

1. Your divorce or family lawyer will hold in strict confidence all information concerning your business and affairs acquired in the course of the professional relationship, regardless of the nature or source of the information or of the fact that others may share the knowledge, and will not share any such information unless disclosure is expressly or impliedly authorized by you, or is required by law or by a court.
2. Your divorce or family lawyer will take all reasonable steps to ensure the privacy and safekeeping of your confidential information.
3. Your divorce or family lawyer will not disclose the fact of having been consulted or retained by you unless the nature of the matter requires such disclosure.
4. Your divorce or family lawyer will preserve your secrets even after the termination of the retainer, whether or not differences have arisen between you and your lawyer.
5. Your divorce or family lawyer will not use any confidential information respecting for the benefit of the lawyer or another person, or to the disadvantage of you. When engaging in a business transaction with a client or former client in the limited circumstances, the lawyer will not use for personal benefit any confidential information acquired in the course of acting for the client.
6. Your divorce or family lawyer who engages in literary work such as an autobiography or memoirs will not disclose your confidential information in the autobiography or memoir.
7. Your divorce or family lawyer will not disclose to one client confidential information concerning or received from another client in a different matter, and shall decline employment or withdraw from a retainer which might require such disclosure.
8. Your divorce or family lawyer will avoid indiscreet conversations or gossip, and will not repeat gossip or information about your affairs, even though you may not be named or otherwise identified.
There are many good reasons to settle your family law case out-of-court, including keeping your case and personal details out of the public records. In the meantime, you can trust that your divorce or family lawyer will protect your privacy and confidentiality.
